Preventing your Compactor from Freezing
Posted On: December 5th, 2019
As cold weather sweeps across the country again this year, we’d like to offer a few tips to prevent a frozen compactor.
Prevention
Here are a few basic tips to reduce the risk and expense of a frozen compactor:
Liquids – Reduce or eliminate liquids from your waste stream. By not throwing liquids in your compactor you can greatly reduce the potential for a compactor freeze-up.
Salt/Urea – Depending on the overall use of your compactor, occasionally throw a small amount of rock salt or urea into the compactor. This will help prevent any liquids in the machine from freezing solid.
Operation – If your compactor is not used consistently during evening hours, a “warm-up” cycle is suggested prior to regular use. Cycle the compactor ram in short cycles for a brief period to ensure that the compactor ram can move adequately in and out. This can prevent major damage and warm the machine cylinders, pumps, valves and oil.
